Lenten Mission lifts up heavy hearts

Faith, hope and love might be broad concepts but they were the focus of a moving presentation March 29. “Lift up Your Heavy Hearts” was the theme of the Lenten Mission at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica March 28-29.

Father Jonathan Morris, parochial vicar of St. Patrick Cathedral, N.Y., spoke about faith, hope and love during his talk. (more…)

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Benedict XVI appealed for a suspension of fighting in Libya and the immediate start of a serious dialogue aimed at restoring peace to the North African country.

Speaking at his weekly blessing March 27, the pope said he was increasingly concerned at the news from Libya, where rebels supported by U.S. and European airstrikes have battled the forces of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. (more…)

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The sacrament of confession can be a teaching moment for both priest and penitent, Pope Benedict XVI said.

While penitents can discover grace and hope from God’s love and forgiveness, priests hearing confession can be inspired to be more honest, humble and transparent about their own sins, he said. (more…)

Survivors, family members, and the community came together March 25 in Port Arthur to observe the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the S/S Texaco Oklahoma.

The day included a prayer service at the Seaman’s Memorial Sundial and panel discussions at the Port Arthur International Seafarer Center. Of the 44 men aboard the Texaco Oklahoma, only 13 survived. Twenty of the crew members were from Port Arthur with five of them being part of the 13 survivors. (more…)

It’s a joyous time for the Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Beaumont. The Together for God’s Good Work Capital Campaign has been a success, and Southeast Texas is now starting to see the results.

Construction is over, staff has been moved in and Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, is inviting all to the dedication of the new Catholic Pastoral Center April 3 with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo and Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza! (more…)

Priests celebrate Holy Hour

Priests from throughout the diocese gathered in the chapel at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, March 22 for the Celebration of Holy Hour. Msgr. Dan Malain gave a reflection on vocations.

“We experience vocation constantly and as we reflect on it we should realize how deep in our being vocation is. We were called and continue to be called to be in the kingdom of God,” Msgr. Malain said. (more…)
