Hundreds across Southeast Texas visited St. Mary Catholic School, Orange, for its 78th Annual Spring Festival April 28-29. They enjoyed good food, live music, games, a volleyball tournament and a talent show. (more…)

Teachers of the year honored

“Teachers are extremely important, and I can’t help but be impressed when I hear about the amazing things you’re all doing at our schools,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said at the Bishop’s Teacher Appreciation Banquet April 26 at St. Pius X, Beaumont.

The banquet honored teachers, principals, and volunteers representing all six schools in the diocese. The schools honored teachers, volunteers and retirees. (more…)

Vidor takes first place in volleyball

More than 20 teams of high school youth from 18 parishes turned out for the High School Volleyball Tournament April 28 at Our Lady of Sorrows, China. And it was the Our Lady of Lourdes team from Vidor that took first place. St. Jude Thaddeus, Beaumont, placed second, and St. Charles Borromeo, Nederland, placed third. (more…)

St. Jude rededicated

After months of remodeling St. Jude Thaddeus, Beaumont, was open for worship April 29. Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, celebrated the Rededication Mass, blessing the church and the baptismal font.

“I must congratulate you all on a magnificent church. It’s almost as if the original designers intended for it to be expanded. But you must remember that a church is more than a building. What’s important is what happens inside the church,” Bishop Guillory said. (more…)

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — As the Catholic Church increases its new evangelization efforts and works for justice and peace in the world, it would be wise to imitate the positive, prophetic approach taken by Blessed John XXIII in his encyclical “Pacem in Terris,” a French archbishop said.

Archbishop Roland Minnerath of Dijon addressed the opening session April 27 of a meeting of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, which was holding the second of three planned meetings preparing to mark the 50th anniversary next year of “Pacem in Terris,” the encyclical “on establishing peace in truth, justice, charity and liberty.”

Mary Ann Glendon, a professor of law at Harvard University and president of the academy, told members their study and discussions would be focused on “the role of religion in the quest for a ‘tranquility of order’ in our increasingly complex and conflict-ridden world.” (more…)

La oficina de corresponsabilidad y comunicaciones tiene buenas noticias para todos los ministerios diocesanos incluyendo el Ministerio Hispano. Los primeros reportes de la Campaña de Fe del Obispo 2012 fueron ya publicados y la información que contienen es alentadora y llena de esperanzas para los ministerios y programas financiados por esta campaña. Este año, 605 familias más se han comprometido comparándolo a la campaña del año pasado.

La Campaña de Fe del Obispo hace posible financiar 18 ministerios Diocesanos en que se incluye a Ministerio Hispano, y también apoya a Caridades Católicas del Sudeste de Texas. El éxito de la campaña depende de la valiosa colaboración de todos los católicos inscritos en nuestra diócesis que actualmente rebasa los 72,000. (more…)

BFA exceeding last year’s numbers

Diocesan Ministries and Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas got some great news this month as the first reports for the 2012 Bishop’s Faith Appeal were compiled. The numbers were very encouraging and indicate that the BFA has seen an increase from last April of 605 more families participating in this year’s campaign.

The number of parishes who are already over their goal in pledges also increased from last April. Twenty-seven parishes are in this category this year. In April 2011 only 19 had reached their goal in pledges. (more…)
