Remembering Sister Joan

Joan Michelle RakeSister Joan Michele Rake, CDP, passed away Dec. 19 at the age of 87. Born in Beaumont to Mary M. Sperier and Edwin Richard Rake on July 2, 1925, she was named Gloria Ann at baptism. Sister Rake graduated from Fannett High School and won a scholarship to Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. On Sept. 8, 1945, she entered the Congregation of Divine Providence and professed first vows as a sister June 21, 1947.

Finding her 65 years of ministry rewarding, she observed, “Teaching, formation ministry, giving retreats and 24 years of counseling and spiritual direction have allowed me to try to help others experience God’s providential love and care.”

Earning degrees from Our Lady of the Lake College, Indiana’s Notre Dame and Pennsylvania’s Duquesne Universities, she taught at St. Genevieve School in Lafayette and at St. Mary’s Parochial and Providence High Schools in San Antonio. She also taught at Duquesne University and in the Corpus Christi Diocesan Diaconate Program. (more…)

As we approach this holy, sacred season of Christmas our hearts are heavy. As we enjoy our own family and friends, I think we will find that our thoughts are often going back to that small New England town and those who will not have their children, their siblings or their mother with them this Christmas.

For the past few days, we have been like Rachel “weeping for her children.” But unlike Rachel who would not be consoled, we are consoled – consoled by our faith and the understanding that these Holy Innocents, who were murdered this December, are now in the loving arms of their Heavenly Father – joyful for all eternity. cns-logoWASHINGTON (CNS) — In the first federal appellate-level hearing on a lawsuit challenging the HHS contraceptive mandate Dec. 14, spirited sparring between judges and attorneys marked proceedings that went twice their scheduled length.

In the hearing, conducted in Washington at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, lawyers could barely complete their sentences before judges asked questions challenging their assertions. (more…)

cns-logoMILWAUKEE (CNS) — Two decisions by a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge have kept the assets of Catholic parishes in southeastern Wisconsin out of reach of the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors seeking compensation for victims/survivors of clergy sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee’s Chapter 11 reorganization.

Judge Susan V. Kelley denied a motion filed in October by the creditors’ committee in which it maintained parishes were “alter egos” of the archdiocese, and in which it sought a “substantive consolidation of the parishes and the debtor,” which is the archdiocese. (more…)

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Dec. 13 at St. James, 3617 Gulfway, Port Arthur. Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Dec. 14, at St. James. Msgr. Montondon will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. (more…)

Mary “Mickey” Rudolph, age 86, passed away on Dec. 8, 2012, in Shepherd.

Funeral for Mickey Rudolph will be Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Church, 702 E. Houston St., Cleveland. Society of Divine Word Father Paul Kahan and Father Eric Groner are celebrants. (more…)
