WASHINGTON (CNS) — Jesuit Father Patrick J. Conroy was unanimously approved as the next House chaplain in a May 25 vote.

Father Conroy, 60, a native of Washington state, had been nominated by House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, himself a Catholic, as the ideal candidate for the position.

The Jesuit succeeds Father Daniel Coughlin, a priest of the Chicago Archdiocese who retired in April after 11 years on the job. (more…)

Parishioners of St. James, Port Arthur, recently remembered those who have and are currently serving the country by praying the rosary in the Rev. J C Coon prayer garden on the church grounds. Members of the Knights of Columbus, Shepherds for Christ prayer group, choir, parish liturgy committee, and office staff assisted in the tribute. (more…)

Candidates for the Permanent Diaconate gathered May 21 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont, for the Institution of Readers. This is the second step on the journey to becoming a permanent deacon. Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, presented each of the candidates with a bible and instructed them to love the word and proclaim it. Class of 2011 well prepared

“You are indeed well prepared, but you will face challenges,” Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, said to the Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School, Beaumont, class of 2011 at the Baccalaureate Mass May 20 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, Beaumont.

Nearly 100 students and their families came together to celebrate the night before the May 21 graduation. Bishop Guillory commended the students on their service over the last four years and urged them to continue being of service in the future. (more…)

Priests come together to celebrate

At the annual Mass to celebrate anniversaries of priests’ ordinations, Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, thanked the priests for their ministry and asked that “Almighty God continue to guide you, strengthen you, enlighten you.” In his homily he said, “We are called to become more like Christ – through teaching, through word, through action and through mission.” (more…)

Unity Explosion, which began as a gathering in 1989, is celebrating more than two decades as a liturgically focused, faith-based evangelization conference. This explosion of faith, among Catholics of African descent, will be held June 15-19 at the Marriot Westchase, 2900 Briarpark Drive in Houston.
