IMG_5663The Beaumont Inter-Diocese Council Court Assemblies and Chapters of the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver joined together Sept. 6 at Our Mother of Mercy Church, Beaumont, for the memorial Mass of St. Peter Claver celebrated by Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD and concelebrated by Josephite Father Lowell Case and Josephite Father Bura Koroba.

“St. Peter Claver heard the call to minister to the poor,” Bishop Guillory said. “He worked in the field with them and he heard what their needs were. God instructs us to hear in the same way, and we have heard what he instructed because we are members of the church.”

IMG_5339Thanks to a generous donation to Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School, the girls’ softball team now has a beautiful new training facility. The facility was dedicated to the Dominican Sisters of Houston and was blessed Aug. 19 by Bishop Curtis Guillory, SVD, with players, staff, family and friends in attendance. (more…)

People first

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Like their Orthodox brothers and sisters, Catholics formally will mark Sept. 1 as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Pope Francis has decided.

The day of prayer, the pope said, will give individuals and communities an opportunity to implore God’s help in protecting creation and an opportunity to ask God’s forgiveness “for sins committed against the world in which we live.” (more…)

fr thompsonThe Josephite Priests and Brothers elected Father Michael L. Thompson, SSJ, as Superior General during their General Conference June 15-19. The Conference, held at Saint Joseph Seminary in Washington, D.C., takes place every four years to conduct regular business by elected representatives of the community.

Father Thompson, 57, a native of Port Arthur who grew up attending Sacred Heart Church, had been serving as Vicar General since 2011. He is the 14th Superior General of the religious community, founded 144 years ago to minister to African Americans. His term runs for four years. (more…)
